Daily reading at home is essential to enhance oral reading skills. The children will continue to write in their Journals and their Morning Message books. We will continue to study blends, making words, compound words, syllables, nouns and verbs. A focus for this month is to have the children re-read their written work for proper sentence structure, to retell a story, and do some procedural, descriptive, and letter writing. This month they will also be adding to their Sight Word Book. In their Sight Word Folder will be a list of words that you and your child can review as needed. Every few weeks they will be given a new or review list. To make it more of a challenge you can even practice spelling the Sight Words. The students will still be given the Word Wall Words on Monday and will be expected to return it by the Thursday of the next week at which time they will have their quiz. In the quiz they may have to write rhyming words, put the words in a different tense, or may have to show how to add a suffix or prefix to the word. Please sign your child's homework (i.e. Word Wall Words, P.O.W., or any other work) and let them know how proud you are of them. Word Wall Words: The words will go home on Mondays and they have until Thursday of the NEXT week to finish their work. The students have their quiz on that Thursday. Please check your child’s work for clarity, neatness , and content . Read Across Canada: Please do not forget to record your child’s reading in their reading log. We have finished reading across Newfoundland & Labrador :) & presently reading across Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia . Next month we will be reading across New Brunswick . Please do not forget to record during the Christmas holidays (YES, THAT TIME IS ALMOST HERE!) The reading they do on RAZ also counts!

When you are helping your child with his / her word list it would be helpful to have your child use the list to . . . Find a word that means the same as______ Find an action word. Find a word that is a noun / verb / adjective etc. Spell a rhyming word Put the word in a different tense Add endings: ed/ing/s/es
Reading: Children are encouraged to read nightly. May I suggest you set aside 10-15 minutes on a regular basis to listen to your child read. Please, record this in their Read Across Canada
Oral and Visual Communication: The children will listen to discussions on familiar topics and be encouraged to ask relevant questions. Each child will also continue to present the daily calendar. If your child has not given their Star of the Week presentation they will be given the chance in the near future.
