MATHEMATICS
We will continue to explore Sorting and Patterning, Number Sense Development (addition & subtraction facts to 18 with regrouping, word problems etc. ) and Measurement ( time – to the 5 minutes, temperature, money, length- cm, m, km, mass- g, kg and volume-ml and l). Another focus this month and the next few months will be the studying of graphs and what data we can get from them. We will continue to work on place value to 100's, 10's and l's, reading and printing number words to 20, counting backwards, and skip counting by 2's, 5's, 10's, and 25's. We will also be learning to solve word problems using words, numbers, and pictures and answering the problem in complete answers. It is important for your child to understand the terms more and less. For example…If Susanna has six cookies and Molly has three more/less cookies than Susanna, how many does Molly have and what is the total?
We have started up with the Estimate Jar and the students appear to enjoy this activity. Each week one student will be given the jar to bring home and to place inside a number of items. Throughout the week the students will be given a chance to estimate how many items are inside, the total weight, and/or the length of the items. At the end of the week the student who brought in the items will count them and share them with the class. The Dollar Store is a good place to get your items. An explanation is posted on the jar.
